Patient Story, Bruce

I just came home from getting a pacemaker. 4days ago I experienced another episode of extreme weakness, barely able to speak. I have been having these for around a year. They have been more frequent and lasting longer.

This episode lasted 3 days. I have been to many drs and had many tests, mostly normal. No diagnosis. I went to ER. My heart rate was 44,45 for the over 1 hr I had tests done. Dr said “ something is definitely wrong ,I am admitting you.

Many tests, all normal. My Cardiologist said your symptoms are happening when your heart rate is low, so iam putting in a pacemaker tomorrow.

That night I somehow remembered several weeks ago I started feeling an “episode” coming on and I had pressed on my abdomen and burp hard 3 times. I stopped feeling bad! I started investigating on line and there it was Roemheld Syndrome.

After a lot of reading I called my wife she read it and couldn’t believe it.

Long story short the pacemaker will help if needed but I have things I can do to avoid it. 1. Limit carbonated beverages 2. Dont eat so fast and talk while eating 3 smaller meals 4 sitting in recliner after meals. And mainly pressing on abdomen creating burping. I use a CPAP machine put can’t avoid that.

After reading other’s symptoms I know some are different but who knows about where vagus nerve is pressured and what different ways it affects the heart.

I hope that some clinical trials will help RS become more recognized in medical community.
